hit the debate stage. making their pitch to the voters. incumbent london bree debated four challengers, including former san francisco supervisor and mayor mark farrell, prominent philanthropist daniel lurie as well as current supervisors aaron peskin and asha safai. the candidates, speaking in front of a sold out crowd at the sidney goldstein theater. ktvu is. amber lee joins us live tonight from the city with a breakdown of tonight's debate. amber >> mike, we're outside the theater where the debate was held. it's only about two blocks from city hall. now there was a bit of excitement and a little bit of heckling from the audience, but overall, the candidates appeared poised and prepared. and the first san francisco mayoral debate leading up to the november election took place before a sold out audience of 1700 at sidney goldstein theater. the first topic of the debate was how to deal with downtown vacancies. >> we have a historic opportunity to purchase buildings and turn them into universities. we also have to invest in things that make

march. >> new at ten a former spokesperson for alameda county district attorney pamela price is suing alameda county for wrongful termination, discrimination and failure to pay wages. the berkeley scanner breaking this story today, the former spokesperson, patty lee, says she was fired after pointing out what she believed were illegal practices, including violations of the state public records act. this followed an incident last year in which berkeley scanner founder emily raguso was denied access to a news conference put on by the da. the district attorney's office said it cannot comment on litigation on personnel matters. patty lee, who formerly worked at ktvu, also alleged anti-asian discrimination, saying, quote, i have never been subjected to such humiliate and bullying behavior in a workplace. it is unacceptable in any professional environment. but when the perpetrator is a public official who claims to be a civil rights advocate, it is unconscionable.

>> oakland's new police chief, speaking today on several arrests made in a series of home invasions, our crime reporter henry lee tells us officers believe one suspect targeted victims of asian descent, working diligently to identify and apprehend individuals and groups responsible for a large number of crimes within our city. >> new oakland police chief floyd mitchell, at his first formal news conference announcing arrests in two separate series of crimes, including a series of armed home invasion robberies that i've learned targeted victims of asian descent. this man, 32 year old derek berens, was arrested by oakland police and charged by the alameda county da with residential robbery and carjacking. i've learned from court records that berens is accused of stealing cash key fobs, chanel and louis vuitton purses, medical cards, even covid vaccine cards belonging to victims. police say he took one victim's toyota camry. some of the home invasions happened before dawn as residents were sleeping. the suspect often yelled at victims. where's the money? this individual has an extensive criminal history for

the street. while these arrests are certainly welcome news, there's no cause for celebration because other cases are unsolved . henry lee ktvu, fox two news. we have an update now to the burglary and deadly shooting at a home on 98th avenue and burr street in oakland on monday night. >> a homeowner shot and killed one of two burglary suspects, ktvu has learned. the surviving burglary suspect, 31 year old john fisher, has been charged with burglary. the homeowner remains in custody but has not been charged with a crime. >> new video tonight of an assault right inside the pinole police department headquarters. at the top of your screen, you can see a man approaching the lobby window. this was yesterday afternoon. police say he grabbed a staff member by the arm. she broke free, and then the man climbed over the counter, chasing the victim down a hall. police officers heard the disturbance and were able to detain the suspect, 65 year old chester victor jr faces assault, burglary and false imprisonment charges in milpitas. a man threw

a flammable device inside a mcdonald's, causing more than $100,000 in damage. police say this happened just after 230 this morning at the mcdonald's on ranch drive. officers say the suspect, 46 year old tai tran, threw a device through a glass window and then ran away. the business was closed at the time, but a fire did start. police say an officer arrested tran shortly after the incident. he is now facing several charges, including arson and felony vandalism, according to officials, the estimated damage is $150,000. >> new at ten tonight, thousands of music lovers are expected to converge on a san jose park this weekend. a music festival will feature some of the bay area's hottest latin house music djs. ktvu la monica peters live now in san jose with more on this weekend's big event. la monica. >> julie. the people i spoke to say this latin house music event is going to be one of the biggest san jose has ever seen, and a local bar says that they're going to be prepared to help people keep the party going. saturday night. >> this is like one of the first

a scaled down market, but loaded with fresh food and nutritious food at that. now, different from a food pantry, people don't have to line up for prepackaged items. customers here were able to shop for what they wanted for free. more than 70 families loaded up their grocery carts at the district ten community market in the bayview wednesday, and they checked out without opening their wallets. lo conocemos. >> so she's saying that she likes being able to pick what she knows that her family is going to eat. >> speaking through an interpreter, prisciliano lopez shopped for her family of four. she says what she takes home today would probably cost her 200 to $300 at a grocery store, and last about two weeks. last i spoke with her husband. >> does work, she says. but the money it's barely enough to pay for the rent. and, you know, like stuff like soap. >> and we have chicken drumsticks. >> family size. the neighborhood lacks access to healthy foods,

which is why it was chosen for the pilot project. the san francisco human services agency partnered with bayview senior services to operate the market. most of the food is supplied by partner stores and agencies like the san francisco food bank and lucky bayview. >> i really hope people get that this is the way to give out food with dignity and that people have choice, and just because you're low income doesn't mean you just get anything. >> community members must meet certain criteria to shop here, including live in certain zip codes, receive public assistance, have children, and be referred by a community organization. >> this card like costco. so we ask, do you have your your district ten market card? >> shoppers must have a grocery card from one of the markets partnering nonprofits to enter. there are limits on quantities of food. two years ago, supervisor asha sapphire introduced the legislation to open such a market in high need neighborhoods. since then, the city has seen many stores like walgreens and cvs closed due to

rampant theft. the majority of the smash and grabs that we've seen have been over the counter drugs, over the counter medicine. >> if there's meat, you know, i think it's secured in a different way and they work with the folks. and if that's something that happened, you know, obviously, though, we'll put some additional resources into protecting it. >> safai went on to say it's the goodwill of the people in this community that is allowing it to be a safe space and operation. now right now, this market is open wednesdays and fridays. next month. the store hopes to increase that to three days a week, and it wants to double the number of customers it serves to at least 1000 by the end of the year. mike and julie, it's great to see those doors open, but saying that look, they can fill the carts, they don't have to pay. >> i'm curious how often can they actually get to go? >> well, right now they're saying once a month per customer, per household. that is, they hope as they scale up it can be two times a month and then hopefully more people that

really can use the help. >> all right, betty, thank you. the san mateo county board of supervisors has voted to allocate millions for new affordable housing. the board voted to use $40 million to fund housing for a number of marginalized groups, including farmworkers, unhoused people, low income seniors and families, former foster youth and individuals with developmental challenges. the vote comes just over a week after a massive fire in redwood city destroyed an affordable housing complex that was under construction. that project was meant to provide 179 units, a child care center, and community space. >> the city of oakland says it's repaved 200 miles of road in oakland, and more work is still to come. mayor shengtao announced this milestone in a video that she shared online today from 60th street, right near international. the mayor said this is part of the city's investment into east oakland transportation director josh rowan telling us the work also includes improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists, for example, high visibility crosswalks. >> we've we've installed 3000 of

bailey. >> hey, julie. good evening. yeah, this cricket has really been the talk of the sports world for the last week. thanks in part to that upset. but for years parents and kids here in the south bay have been quietly working to get the sport officially sanctioned by the cif . >> it's been growing and like every day new people come and they ask me, oh wait, what's what are you playing? how do i play? how do you play this? how do you hold the bat? and sometimes it's the teachers as well. >> cricket is the second most played sport on the planet, though less than a quarter of a million people play in the u.s. the country could just be cricket's next frontier. according to the california cricket association, hundreds of kids and their parents in the south bay want the sport to be recognized by the california interscholastic federation. the official governing body of high school sports in the state, as a way to grow the game, they and so many love. >> there is a break in the pathway when they go to high

school. that is really heartbreaking, right now. >> some students in the south bay are introduced to the game as part of their physical education classes in middle school, but once they reach high school, those opportunities vanish. >> high school brings its demands and you have to sacrifice something to get something and the fact that you don't get any credits playing cricket. he was heartbroken. not only him, a bunch of his friends at high school, they were all wondering, what do i do now? >> years after they started working to get the sport recognized, state assemblyman ash kalra joined the fight, officially drafting a resolution or official request that the cif recognize the sport. >> i'm hoping that we can get it done over the next couple of years, but obviously we'll have to work with the department of education. we'll have to work with the administration and legislative leadership because, you know, there will obviously be some costs involved in getting that up and going. >> and this could be the group's golden opportunity. the sport is booming. team usa is fresh off one of the biggest upsets in the

history of cricket. just last week, beating the pakistani national team in the world cup and for the first time in more than 120 years, the sport will be featured at the 2028 olympic games in los angeles. but even then, getting the sport recognized by the cif is no easy process. >> there's a lot of convincing that you have to do the main concern the group's been met with. >> i think it's all about us proving that there are enough players and there's enough momentum. >> question now is what exactly needs to happen for it to become recognized by the cif? well, they would have to introduce that at a meeting and then it would have to be voted on by cif representatives from all across the state. we can look to girls flag football, which was just passed last year, a recently for kind of an example. and it took them years to get that officially passed to officially be recognized as a cif sanctioned sport. so again, it could be years until we actually

see cricket be recognized. now we did reach out to the cif to see if they're aware of this request. they did not respond to that request for comment in cupertino. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, fun to learn about the cricket craze. bailey. thank you. well the oakland strokes rowing club is fresh off winning a national title at the rowing youth national championships in florida. the club sent 69 athletes and nine boats competing against 8000 other kids from more than 240 clubs across the country. the men's team won first place, marking the strokes 24th national title. the women's team also performed remarkably well, four boats finishing in 11th, seventh, sixth and fifth place. >> it takes a village like the coaching staff. we couldn't be able to do it without them and then parents, the board, just everyone's kind of coming together for this one big goal and it's really powerful to see how it unfolds. we really created like a family within our boat. we were all best friends.

people to come into this area and, and establish their business here. >> hawkins is ceo and co-founder of oakland's lgbtq community center. this past weekend, the annual rainbow fair was a celebration of the area's growth, and it was a sort of coming out party for our lgbtq cultural district. in just six years since the oakland lgbtq center opened on lakeshore avenue, it's expanded services to include a clinic and a town youth club center that serves about 500 youth. there is also a new office this is our conference room that where we can have, you know, meetings with our funders. >> our elders program has expanded our youth program has expanded, our mental health services, our emergency housing assistance, our clinic and sexual health services have expanded. >> now the community is fundraising for a flagpole and rainbow crosswalks. >> we want to do a crosswalk in

it's one of those candidates is introducing a bill focused on election integrity. silicon valley's assembly member, evan lowe authored the bill. it would require an automatic vote recount in statewide races with close results. now, this would only happen when the margin of victory is less than 0.25% of the ballots cast, or less than 25 individual votes. the bill also requires financial contributions to voter requested recounts, costing more than $10,000 to be reported to county officials and published on election websites. the bill is waiting for a referral to committees in the state senate. >> a behavioral therapist in the south bay has now been arrested after police say he sexually assaulted a girl during a session at her home. >> as ktvu zan rubin shows us tonight, investigators say they now believe this has been happening for months and there could be other victims. >> san jose police have arrested a behavioral therapist,

alejandro lopez nunez, for sexually assaulting a special needs girl. they say family members made the discovery when they walked in on a therapy session at their home. >> they were able to basically catch the suspect in the act. act of sexually molesting or assaulting the victim. >> lopez nunez worked for trumpet behavioral health, which focuses on patients with autism. he was also a part time instructional aide at forest hill elementary school. upon investigation, sapd determined the sexual assault had been going on since at least march. >> i know this could be traumatic for our children, especially when they look up to adults who are, again a person of trust in their lives, whether as a teacher or a therapist. so it's hard to come forward. >> experts at stanford university say that's especially true of children who are special needs or on the autism spectrum. >> they are really at risk to be , manipulated and be bullied, and they can easily be
