Ellie Goulding& Juice WRLD?’s “Hate Me” re-entered theBillboard Hot 100 this week (Nov. 2), but the song is anything but a joyous feat.
Their verses oscillate on the “thin line between all this love and hate,” as they plead their exes to hate them long after their doomed relationships, which captures a second meaning of hating them for still longing for them. Gouldingtold Apple Music’s Beats 1’s Zane Lowehow she ditched the “rose-colored glasses” to finally seize the painful truth of broken relationships.
“The truth of the matter is that humans are crazy and do f—ed up things to people, and that’s the truth. Sometimes I think you need to hear that. You need to hear it… to sort of validate your own situation, and it happens a lot,” she said in the interview. “I played it to Juice WRLD, he loved it and wanted to be involved.
The music video, which premiered back in July, paints a destructive picture — replete with voodoo dolls and punching walls — that showcase different ways of getting over a significant other.
