8[This mention of a rest was not a reference to their entering into Canaan.] For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak about another day [of opportunity] after that. 9So there remains a [full and complete] Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own.(A) 11Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience [as those who died in the wilderness]. 12For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged [a]sword, penetrating as far as the division of the [b]soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, and revealed to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account.
14Inasmuch then as we [believers] have a great High Priest who has [already ascended and] passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior]. 15For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been tempted [knowing exactly how it feels to be human] in every respect as we are, yet without [committing any] sin. 16Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].

- Hebrews 4:12 In addition to “sword,” the word in Greek was used for the knife used by the priests to slit the throats of the sacrificial lambs and for the knife (scalpel) used by a surgeon.
- Hebrews 4:12 “soul and spirit” used here to emphasize the whole person, not two separate entities as in other passages.

8For if [a]Joshua had (A)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
The Word Discovers Our Condition
11(B)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12For the word of God is (C)living and powerful, and (D)sharper than any (E)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (F)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13(G)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (H)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Our Compassionate High Priest
14Seeing then that we have a great (I)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (J)let us hold fast our confession. 15For (K)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (L)was in all points tempted as we are, (M)yet without sin. 16(N)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

8For if Joshua had given them rest,(A) God would not have spoken(B) later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[a](C) just as God did from his.(D) 11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(E)
12For the word of God(F) is alive(G) and active.(H) Sharper than any double-edged sword,(I) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(J) 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.(K) Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Jesus the Great High Priest
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest(L) who has ascended into heaven,[b](M) Jesus the Son of God,(N) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(O) 15For we do not have a high priest(P) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(Q)—yet he did not sin.(R) 16Let us then approach(S) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(T) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
